If you’re considering physiotherapy for your child, you’re probably carrying around a few questions.
Will my child enjoy it? What happens during the appointment? Will they be expected to do lots of exercises? And perhaps the biggest question of all… are we doing the right thing?
At Therapy Stars, we know that taking the first step can feel daunting. For many families, it’s a completely new experience. That’s why we aim to make the whole process as welcoming and straightforward as possible, from your first phone call through to your first appointment.
It Starts With a Conversation
You don’t need to know exactly what your child needs before getting in touch.
Our team is always happy to have an informal chat, answer your questions, and help you decide whether physiotherapy is the right next step for your family.
If you decide to book an initial assessment, we’ll ask you to complete a parent questionnaire before your appointment. This helps us understand a little about your child before you arrive, so we can make the most of our time together.
Getting to Know Your Child
Every child who comes through our doors is different.
Some children have a diagnosis. Others may simply not be meeting milestones as expected, or perhaps you’ve noticed they’re finding certain activities more difficult than other children their age.
Your first appointment is all about getting to know your child. We’ll spend time talking with you about your concerns, your child’s development, and the goals that matter most to your family.
Just as importantly, we’ll spend time getting to know your child too.
Don’t Expect Your Child to Sit Still!
Parents are often surprised by how relaxed our assessments feel.
Children aren’t expected to sit on a treatment couch or follow lots of instructions. Instead, we encourage them to explore, play, and move naturally around the clinic.
Through carefully chosen activities, our therapists can observe how your child moves, how they approach different challenges, and where they may benefit from extra support.
To your child, it often just feels like play.
To us, it’s an opportunity to build a detailed picture of their strengths and the areas where we can help.
There’s No Pressure
One of the questions we’re asked most often is whether families need to commit to ongoing treatment after the assessment.
The simple answer is no.
At the end of your appointment, we’ll explain what we’ve observed and talk through our recommendations together. We’ll answer any questions you have and discuss the options available.
For some families, that might mean regular physiotherapy sessions. For others, an intensive programme may be the most appropriate approach. Sometimes, we’ll simply provide advice and practical ideas for home.
Every recommendation is tailored to your child and their individual needs.
You’re Part of the Journey
We believe the best outcomes come from working together.
As parents, you know your child better than anyone else. Our role is to give you the knowledge and confidence to support them, both in the clinic and at home. We’ll always explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how you can continue encouraging movement as part of everyday family life.
If you’ve been thinking about physiotherapy and would like to find out more, we’d love to hear from you.
