Helping Your Child Feel Ready for a New School Year

Helping Your Child Feel Ready for a New School Year

As summer begins to draw to a close, many families start thinking about the weeks ahead. For some, that means getting ready for a new school year. Others may be preparing for nursery, returning to college, or simply settling back into a familiar routine after the holidays.

Whatever September looks like for your family, it often brings a sense of change. With a little preparation, you can help your child feel confident and ready for what’s ahead.

Gently Return to Routine

The summer holidays are a chance to relax and enjoy time together, so there’s no need to rush back into school mode too early.

As the new term gets closer, it can help to gradually reintroduce parts of your usual routine. Moving bedtime a little earlier, getting dressed at a similar time each morning, or practising the journey to school can all make the transition feel more familiar.

There’s no need to change everything at once. Small adjustments are often easier for children to manage and can help September feel less overwhelming.

Keep Movement Part of Everyday Life

As routines begin to return, it’s easy for family life to become busier again.

Try to keep making time for movement, even if it’s just in small ways. A walk to the park after school, helping with jobs around the house, or spending time playing in the garden all encourage children to keep moving while enjoying themselves.

If your child has physiotherapy goals they’re working towards, look for opportunities to include them naturally in everyday activities. Therapy doesn’t always need to feel like therapy.

Helping Children Feel Confident

For children who are heading back to school or nursery, the start of a new term can bring lots of excitement alongside a few nerves. Talking about what to expect, looking at photos of the classroom, or visiting the school gates before term starts can help children feel more prepared.

If your child is moving to a new setting or meeting a new teacher, giving them plenty of opportunities to ask questions can also help build confidence before the first day arrives.

Celebrate How Far They’ve Come

It’s easy to focus on what’s coming next.

Before September arrives, take a moment to look back at everything your child has achieved over the past year. Progress isn’t always measured by big milestones. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference, whether that’s climbing the stairs more confidently, joining in with a game, or trying something new for the first time.

Every achievement deserves to be celebrated.

Remember, Every Child’s Journey Is Different

September can feel like a fresh start, but every child’s path will look different.

Some children will be excited for a new school year. Others may need a little longer to settle into new routines. Some families may not be returning to school at all.

Wherever your child is on their journey, remember there’s no right pace. What’s important is helping them feel supported, encouraged, and confident to keep moving forward.
