Five Indoor Games to Keep Toddlers Active and Building Strength This Winter

When the weather turns chilly, getting outside can be a challenge. But that doesn’t mean your toddler has to miss out on active play. Movement is essential for building strength, coordination and confidence, and there are lots of fun ways to keep little little ones busy indoors.

Here are five of our favourite toddler-friendly games that work beautifully in your home. All of them are featured in our Therapy Stars Winter Play Pack, so you can download the full version below for even more ideas.

  1. Penguin waddle race
This one always gets giggles! Ask your toddler to hold a soft ball or cuddly toy between their knees and waddle like a penguin to the other side of the room. It helps to strengthen leg muscles and improves balance. Make it even more exciting by adding a “finish line” made of cushions or a small tunnel to crawl through.
  2. Snowflake jumps
Cut out paper snowflakes and scatter them on the floor. Your child can jump, hop or step from one to another, practising different movements each time. Try asking questions like “Can you jump to the big snowflake?” or “Can you spin before you land?” This simple activity builds coordination and body awareness.
  3. Elf delivery game
Pretend your toddler is a busy Christmas elf, carrying small “presents” (toys, soft blocks or rolled socks) across the room. They can use tongs or a spoon to pick them up and deliver them to a basket or box. It’s brilliant for hand-eye coordination, balance and concentration.
  4. Build a snowman
Stack cushions, boxes or even laundry baskets to make a snowman shape, then have fun balancing, knocking down and rebuilding it together. This encourages problem-solving, gross motor skills and teamwork.
  5. Indoor obstacle course
Create a safe course using everyday items, such as cushions to step on, chairs to crawl under and masking tape lines to balance along. Encourage your toddler to move in different ways, such as crawling, marching or hopping. Courses like this build strength and help your child learn to plan movements.

Keep track of progress

It’s lovely to see your child’s skills grow over time. Use our Therapy Stars Winter Progress Tracker [link to PDF] to record changes in balance, stamina and confidence each week. A few quick notes are all it takes to notice just how much progress those small moments of play create.

Play doesn’t have to be perfect. The most important thing is that your toddler feels happy, safe and excited to move.
